Has a children’s book ever made you cry?
True story, I bought this book as a gift for my niece and only skimmed through it at the store but when I got home and read it… waterworks 😭
But I wasn’t the only one, when I gave it to my niece my cousin and her sister started reading and quickly called in my aunt to join who then decided to read aloud. She started off on a clear voice and then halfway through he voice started to crack and then she just stopped, looking around and we were all pretty much in the same shape: red blotchy face, goosebumps and tears welled up in our eyes.
Lola is an immigrant child, her family moved with her to the US when she was just a baby so she doesn’t remember the island she came from, and has to rely on others telling her about it so she can do her school project.
But as she learns about her island she gets confused, why did they all leave if all their memories are so wonderful, the island is so beautiful and full of color and music?
But not all is good, Lola learns of the hurricane that destroyed her home when she was a baby and of the Monster who ruled the island and filled everyone with fear decades ago.
So why should you read this book to kids? Well, it’s a great story, for both kids and adults. Having been born in the same island as Lola and having a daughter who like Lola left it being only a baby one line in the book resonated: “Just because you don’t remember a place, doesn’t mean it isn’t in you.”
Lola learns about the island she left and how so many good things about it are around her every day, she learns of the strong brave women and men who fought the Monster. We learn, if we didn’t know it already, that remembering our place of birth is often bittersweet.
My kids loved it, my oldest definitely identified with Lola but also we try to visit often so they can all experience our roots, the boys loved the part of the monster and those who defeated him, and all the beautiful and colorful illustrations.

¿Alguna vez un libro para niños te ha hecho llorar?
Historia Real, compré este libro como un regalo para mi sobrina y solo lo hojeé en la tienda, pero cuando llegué a casa y lo leí … llanto 😭
Pero no fui la única, cuando se lo di a mi sobrina, mi prima y su hermana comenzaron a leer y rápidamente llamaron a mi tía para que se uniera, quien decidió leerlo en voz alta. Ella comenzó con una voz clara y luego a mitad su voz comenzó a quebrarse y luego se detuvo, mirando alrededos todas estábamos más o menos en la misma forma: cara enrojecida, piel de gallina y lágrimas en nuestros ojos.
Lola es una niña inmigrante, su familia se mudó con ella a los EE. UU. Cuando era solo una bebé, por lo que no recuerda la isla de la que vino y tiene que confiar en que otros le cuenten para que pueda hacer su proyecto escolar.
Pero a medida que se entera de su isla, se confunde, ¿por qué se fueron todos si todos sus recuerdos son tan maravillosos, la isla es tan hermosa y llena de color y música?

A mis hijos les encantó, mi hija mayor definitivamente se identificó con Lola, pero también tratamos de visitarlos a menudo para que todos puedan experimentar nuestras raíces, a los niños les encantó la parte del monstruo y los que lo derrotaron, y todas las bellas y coloridas ilustraciones.
